Street style: pulling off a raccoon hat

I really adore this look, seen on Stil in Berlin. I think it's amazing that this works, or that a raccoon hat can work at all. Maybe it's the modesty and understated chicness of the rest of the outfit that just makes the hat not only work, but totally necessary.

Be sure to go over to Square America to check out the series on Photobooth Portraiture. These are some of my very favorites from the series, but the site is stuffed with other great series, including one you can't miss on hairstyles.

I think my favorite here has to be the last one, where only the forehead and ponytail of a little girl obviously too short for the photobooth poses anyway.

If you live in a place lucky enough to have orchards, take the day and go apple-picking before the season is over, which is very soon. I went a few weeks ago in Wisconsin, and it was just lovely, though my quest for Macintosh apples ended at the grocery store here in Colorado.

After seeing her photos in Vice, I went to Annabel Mehran's site, and was totally flabbergasted by her new projects. I absolutely adore these photos. Although I'll admit that I'm a major sucker for ethereal photos of girls in pretty dresses, there's something else that I really admire in her work, even if I can't quite articulate it. I'll be heading home later this month to meet my new nephew and see the rest of my family for my birthday. Seeing these paper planes made me even more excited for the trip.

I just ran across this shop on Etsy that just started selling yesterday, and fell instantly in love with the paper plane reconstructions they have for sale at very reasonable prices. Be sure to pick one up at panchabheda.

I found myself doing quite a bit of knitting today--it's the perfect season to whip up loads of scarves and mittens, and something about fall just makes me feel very domestic and at-home. I ran off to get tons of new fall colors, many of which will be coming to the shop in the coming weeks.

Monday Muse: The Spirit of the Beehive

Last week, we watched The Spirit of the Beehive (again). This is one of my very favorite films--filmed in 1973, but set in 1940's Spain. There's a sort of overhanging dread throughout the film, like something is going to go very, very wrong, but so many things could go very, very wrong that you're not sure where to focus.

But beyond all the dread of potentially life-shattering events and the minimalist filmscape, I can't help but think, "I really want those little shoes" and "I never thought of navy blue and chocolate brown together. I love that idea."

It's so rare that I come across a shop and think "I want everything. Absolutely everything." I stumbled across PaperBinder's Etsy shop last night and seriously want to buy everything in it. I'm already a sucker for cute paper goods, but these seem universally appealing and downright sweet, not to mention their price tags, which are so reasonable. So here is my imaginary day where I've actually bought all these things and they're filling my life with straight up goodness.

I go out to my porch to have my morning cup of coffee and watch the summer breeze swinging this darling little birdcage around:

I go back inside and write my mom a little note, and hang on the tiniest hanger of life. I pop in in the mail to her and know just how much it's going to brighten her day:

It's time to head out to a few estate sales and maybe to the farmer's market, so I grab this sweet little tote to store all my finds:

Tuesday Trends: Staging

There's nothing I like more than a superbly staged item photo. Some shops, like Solanah, are simply known for their expertly staged and truly retro photos that just fling you back in time to the original life of the item. What I love about her shop is the absolute reveling in nostalgic goodness:

A shop that's new to me is Dalena Vintage. Browsing through this shop is like walking through the home of some reclusive and glorious celebrity whose live-in best friend also happens to be a master photographer equipped with a Polaroid land camera:

Last week, I posted about the movie Grey Gardens. The shop Vanille Vintage feels very much like a glammed-up Grey Gardens, where a rustic exterior is met head-on with vibrant and very modern shapes and design, like the glamor of an outfit will always outspeak its surroundings:

So many of Sparkle Bird's photos remind me of Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills. They all seem plucked from a larger, grander narrative, and we can only piece together the story, which is undoubtedly intriguing and ridiculously fascinating:

Monday Muse: Symbiopsychotaxiplasm

Last week, we watched a pretty amazing film, Symbiopsychotaxiplasm. It's shot in Central Park, where multiple sets of actors reshoot the same scene again and again with mis-direction, no direction, and poor direction.

A separate camera crew is filming the first camera crew, and all the workings of the film are hyper-analyzed by the crew in a scene where they're all sitting in a smoke-filled editing room as they critique the shortcomings of the director to death.

The only part of the film that's "directed" is the scene between the two actors in Central Park--the real action is what's happening around that scene. Although the film itself was amazing, it was really the fashions of Central Park in the late 60's that kept me entertained (i.e., distracted) for most of the movie. While I was really supposed to be focusing on the narrative and meta-narrative of the movie, I kept thinking, "I want that dress, and that dress and that dress..."

So, recreate Symbiopsychotaxiplasm in the park with these finds, and rent the movie while you're at it!

Tuesday Trends: Animal Print

Monday Muse: Grey Gardens

I re-watched Grey Gardens last week, in the hopes that it would psychically encourage HBO to release the fictionalized version I've heard so much about on DVD. So, if you feel like having a little piece of the film in your home, I found a few things that might bring the Gardens in:

I stumbled across this lovely undiscovered shop today with photographs that joins minuscule forest animals with larger than life daily items. Any of these prints would make a lovely accompaniment to any room, though I'm thinking in particular about how great a few of them would look in a bright kitchen, especially on these technicolor summer days.
